KEA's Legislative Goals

KEA vision:  Kentucky Education Association is the preeminent voice for quality public education.

KEA mission:  We unite, organize, and empower members to advocate for themselves and to ensure a quality public education for every Kentucky student

The Kentucky Education Association lobbies on behalf of its 41,000+ members on issues affecting children and public education.  In support of its vision and mission, KEA identified the following legislative goals:

  1. Advocate for equitable and adequate funding required to implement SB1, the ambitious education reform initiative passed by the 2009 General Assembly.

  2. Advocate for a high quality education for every public school student in the Commonwealth.

  3. Advocate for a strong profession.

  4. Advocate for adequate school employee compensation, sufficient retirement benefits and affordable health insurance for public school employees and their dependents.

Many issues are relevant to reaching these goals.  In general, adequate funding for Kentucky’s public schools is a constant concern, and KEA recently partnered with other education interest groups through the Kentucky Education Action Team (“KEAT”) to cooperatively lobby the legislature on that issue.  You can learn more about KEATat www.kyeat.org.

KEA's Delegate Assembly adopts a comprehensive legislative program each April that specifies the issues of interest to our members  Click here to see KEA's comprehensive legislative program.

It’s not just the Kentucky legislature that impacts our public schools.  Congress and various federal agencies exert their influence as well.  For federal issues, KEA relies on NEA’s lobbyists in Washington, D.C.  Click to visit NEA's Legislative Action Center to learn more about federal legislative issues.
